Cardiac Troponins and Chronic Kidney Disease, What do we Know?

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the first cause of mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease. Identifying patients at high risk for CVD is a diagnostic challenge for nephrologists and other clinicians. In the last decades, new biomarkers of myocardial damage have appeared, such as cardiac troponins. Their prognostic value has been widely studied in patients with impaired renal function. However, it has not yet been possible to make a good prognostic stratification of these patients, since the conclusions of the different studies are diverse.
