Nano grid: Solution for Oil Spills

Adina Campbell

Oil spill results from contamination of seawater due to oil pour. Oil spills can be disastrous for oceans, rivers, and the marine wildlife that reside within
it. Traditional methods of clearing the oil spillages are not adequate and require a better solution. “Nano grid” shows a promising alternate to tackle the cleanup
operation. A team led by Professor Pelagia-Irene Gouma at the State University of New York Stony Brook developed this nano-based solution. This nano
grid comprises metal grids made of copper tungsten oxide, that, in the presence of sunlight gets activated, can break down oil from a spills into biodegradable
compounds.
