Lateral sinus, Transverse Sinus and Jugular Vein Thrombosis as a Rare Complication of Chronic Mastoiditis

Transverse sinus, lateral sinus and jugularvein thrombosis is a rare disease and their early treatment is important for decreasing the morbidity and mortality. The involvement of lateral sinus and transverse sinus during the course of ear infection were a wellknown complication in preantibiotic days, but lateral and transverse sinus thrombosis is an uncommon cranial complication of otitis media nowadays. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging plays a major role in diagnosis and management. The advance of non-invasive diagnostic techniques and broad-spectrum antibiotics has dramatically decreased the mortality and altered the diagnostic and treatment paradigm. Surgical exploration and debridement of the infected thrombosed sinus seems to be effective. Recently, anti-coagulant treatment has also been proposed. We want to present a case with lateral sinus, transverse sinus and jugular vein thrombosis which were treated successfully to call attention to a rare, but possibly fatal complication of chronic suppurative otitis media.
