Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease in Children: Respiratory Manifestations

Gastroesophageal and laryngopharyngeal reflux are quite prevalent in the United States, with an estimated 75 million people suffering from symptoms of reflux. While the national prevalence of gastroesophageal reflux disease is on the rise, pediatric reflux disease presents very differently and is likely underdiagnosed as a result. One study noted that among children aged 1–5 years with GERD, more than half had to wait 3 or more months after the onset of symptoms before the condition was diagnosed, and 78% visited multiple physicians before receiving the correct diagnosis.
