Female circumcision is a very important health problem affecting about 140 million people all around the world. Its global annual incidence is believed to be 3 in one million people. Female genital mutilation has been reported to occur in all parts of the world, but it is most prevalent in: the western, eastern, and north-eastern regions of Africa, some countries in Asia and the Middle East and among certain immigrant communities in North America and Europe. With its origins in the history dating back to very old times, the female circumcision has reached the present day as a social and cultural practice.
